You're Getting Politics In My--Everything

I'm not apolitical, but my political beliefs are hodgepodge that makes it difficult for me to agree with either of the major political parties. I don't like them. I don't trust them. I have what I consider good reasons for the dislike and distrust.

Over my adult life, I've seen a gradual encroachment of politics into more and more spheres of life. That annoys me. It also scares me a little, partly because it has been accompanied by increasing bitterness and vicious stereotyping on the part of too many people. The reality is that:

(a) Rank and file Republicans and Democrats, even the most conservative and liberal ones, have far more in common with each other in the way they live and in their economic/political self-interest than they have in common with "their" party leaders in Washington.

(b) Republicans and Democrats are nice people or bad people independent of their political affiliations/beliefs, with huge overlaps in just about every category you can think of. Republicans and Democrats both love/hate cats/dogs. They both buy or don't buy the latest gizmos, like/hate anime, like/don't like science fiction. If you're an author of fiction, I can almost guarantee that a significant fraction (at least 20-25% of your potential audience) is of the opposite political persuasion.
